Hip, knee, ankle & foot pain

Hip Pain

Hip pain is a common complaint, with many causes.  A frequent reason for pain over the hip and buttock is from referred and/or nerve pain from the lower back.

Another common reason is osteoarthritis (wear and tear) of the hip joint. This problem mainly affects older people, with 25% of women and 15% of  men experiencing symptoms over the age of 60 years.

Previous trauma, including fracture and dislocation, or previous diseases of the hip and family history predisposes  the hip joint to osteoarthritic change.

If you experience pain around the hip with the following, you should consult a Chiropractor for the correct diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Putting a stop to it

Degeneration of your joints cannot be reversed, but your chiropractor can help to improve muscle and joint function and if necessary, reduce any nerve irritation.

Once he/she has examined you fully, discussed your case history with you and, where necessary, taken x-rays, you will be given a diagnoses and appropriate treatment. This may involve often gentle, specific hand movements, known as adjustments, to treat the joints, reducing pain and inflammation. You may be given advice about healthier habits in your workplace or favourite sport, as well as tips on exercise, diet and posture.

After Chiropractic care, your body will be more resilient to further damage.

Knee Pain

The knee is a hinge joint, made from the connection of the thigh and shin bones. It is supported by ligaments and muscles, which allows it to retain flexability and cushioned by the cartilage.

The knee is one of the most used joints in the body. We use it when we run, walk, lift, sit and bend etc.  It is no wonder it is subject to injury and osteoarthritis.

The imbalance of the muscles that surround the knee creates poor mechanics, which leads to non-traumatic knee pain and wear and tear. Sports and certain activities/trauma can cause pain, swelling and stiffness to the knee joint, when ligaments, cartilage are stretched beyond their normal limit.

Another common cause of knee pain is osteoarthritis (wear and tear). This usually occurs as a result of repeated damage of the cartilage, eventually exposing the bare bones.

If you experience pain around the knee with the following, you should consult a Chiropractor for the correct diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Ankle pain

The most common ankle injury is a sprain. This usually involves 'going over' on the ankle causing pain, swelling and stiffness. Usually ankle sprains respond to RICE - rest, ice, compression and elevation. This helps with the initial discomfort.
However occasionally the ankle joint can remain stiff and painful with laxity or weakness in the ligaments which can result in further injury.

If ankle problems persist it is recommended that you consult your a Chiropractor for further advice and treatment.

Foot Pain

Chiropractic care is beneficial for many foot and ankle complaints including foot and ankle sprains.
Plantar Fascitis is a painful and sometimes debilitating condition affecting the sole of the foot and in particular pain is felt under the heel when weight bearing. Often the first few steps in the morning are the most painful.
Foot and ankle problems can cause you to limp, which in time can cause secondary knee, hip and back problems.
